Raksha Bandhan is the festival, which celebrates the deep bond between a brother and sister. It falls on the full moon day, in the month of Shravan of lunar calendar. Sister tie  Rakhi, on the wrist of her brother and pray for his long life, and brother vows to protect her honor. It’s also known as the ‘Raksha Bandhan’. The significance of the day is quite special, as well as historical.  Lord Yama was tied Rakhi by his sister Yamuna. She gave the boon of immortality to Yama, pleased with which, Yama declared that whoever tied Rakhi to her brother, would get protection for her life. Even in ancient puranaas, the thread was known to be tied by rishis, especially to those, who came to seek blessings. It was meant to safeguard them from evil. The practice transcended down the years and has been heard in Indian history. Rani Karnavati of Chittor was once known to have sent Rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun. She did this in an attempt to safeguard herself from  Bahadur Shah Of Mewar .Rani Karnavati took up the regency in the name of her elder son Vikramjeet, a weak ruler. Mewar was attacked for the second time by Bahadur Shah , at whose hands Vikramjeet had earlier received an defeat. It was a matter of great concern for Rani. Rani sent a Rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, calling him a brother and asking for help She was beautifully rewarded as Humayun halted the ongoing military campaign and rode to her rescue.. Although, Rakhi has taken up several new forms, especially in terms of fashion but, the age old belief behind this fectival is  that of ‘protection’, which still remains the same. Since the holy thread defines protection or ‘Raksha’ by a brother, the festival is known as the ‘bond of protection’ or ‘Raksha Bandhan’. The thread, crafted in  beautiful designs using  sequins, beads, zeri and stones. The day marks the celebration between brothers and sisters as they get a chance to express their heartfelt feelings for each other. The bond does not just celebrate protection, but also celebrates the love and affection. The ritual begins with the sisters applying tilak on the forehead of their brothers, tying the sacred thread, followed by the arti , praying for the long life of brothers. The brother in return  vows to protect the sister and offers her a gift. Many women also like to tie the thread to a Tulsi plant to avail the goodness and holiness of the plant. Despite any number of traditions, the basics remain the same and the day is looked forward by all the sisters and brothers.
